Hello, my name is Hayden Hares, I am a freshman at St. Norbert College, studying elementary education. From an early age, I knew I wanted to help others better themselves. This desire has always been at the core of my ambition, and it ultimately led me to pursue a career in education. Growing up with a sister who is a teacher played a pivotal role in shaping my understanding of the teaching profession and its impact on others. My journey toward becoming an educator took shape during high school, where I had the opportunity to work with middle school students through a class called “Peer2Peer.” This experience, along with many others, ignited a passion for teaching that has only grown stronger as I continue my studies at St. Norbert College.
The “Peer2Peer” program was a transformative experience for me. As a sophomore, I had the opportunity to help teach middle school students, which opened my eyes to the power of education and the difference a teacher can make. Over the course of the next two years, my love for teaching blossomed as I continued to engage with students and learn from their unique perspectives. I realized that teaching wasn’t just about sharing knowledge, but, about building connections, fostering growth, and supporting students through their learning journeys. These experiences allowed me to see teaching as more than just a profession, but as a place to continually learn and grow alongside my students.
Throughout high school, I was involved in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, but I always made time to reflect on my experiences in the classroom. I recognized how fortunate I was to have the opportunity to work with students and teachers who not only taught me valuable lessons but also helped me discover my true passion for education. As I spent more time teaching, I realized that the process wasn’t one-sided, while I was guiding my students they were teaching me just as much. The relationships I built with them and the lessons I learned from their diverse perspectives were invaluable. It was through these moments that I truly understood how meaningful and fulfilling teaching could be, and I began to fall in love with the idea of making it my life’s work.
As I transition into my college years and continue to grow as an educator, I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead. I know that my journey is just beginning, but I am deeply grateful for the experiences and people that have shaped me so far. If it weren’t for my sister, who inspired me with her own dedication to teaching, and the “Peer2Peer” class, I might never have discovered my true passion. I now look forward to my future with excitement, knowing that teaching won’t feel like a job, but rather a space where I can learn, grow, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of my students.
